Why Small Steps Matter More Than You Think

More Than a Year Later, I Was Still Drowning

It was more than a year after I left.

I had a roof over my head. My boys were with me. I was no longer living in the abusive relationship.

And I was still drowning.

I had no clear path forward. Most days were about getting through what was directly in front of me while wondering when survival would begin to feel more like living.

Hello Courageous Women

When you believe you should already know how to move forward, every decision can feel heavier. Sometimes the first small step is being somewhere you do not have to explain why rebuilding is taking time.

If you would value a place where you can read quietly, connect at your own pace and be among women who understand the longer aftermath, you are welcome to join the Inner Freedom Facebook Community.

What Began to Move Me Forward

I did not have a plan. I did not have a breakthrough moment. I did not wake up one morning knowing what to do.

What happened was smaller than that.

I began noticing what I still had.

Not because someone told me to think positively, and not because gratitude made the pressure disappear. It was more like a pull towards what was still present when so much felt uncertain.

I have a roof over my head. I have my boys. I am still here.

I did not call it gratitude then. Looking back, I can see that this noticing was one of my first small steps.

It did not transform everything overnight. It gave me one moment in which pain was not the only thing receiving my attention. Then there was another moment, and another.

If you would like to explore that part of my journey more deeply, you may find support in How Gratitude Helps After Domestic Violence.

Why Small Steps After Leaving an Abusive Relationship Matter

Small steps after leaving an abusive relationship can make moving forward feel more manageable when the bigger questions seem overwhelming.

After years of having your choices questioned, controlled or used against you, an ordinary decision may still carry more weight than other people realise.

You may pause before acting. You may second-guess what you want. You may wait until you feel certain before choosing anything at all.

These responses do not prove that something is wrong with you. They may reflect what you learnt while living with uncertainty and control.

The problem is that a big question can ask too much of you at once.

What should I do with my life?

How do I fix everything?

When will I finally feel better?

Those questions demand a whole map when you may only have enough energy for the next few metres.

You do not need the whole plan before one small action can matter.

A Moment to Reflect

What feels too big because you are trying to solve all of it at once?

Now narrow it down:

What is one part of this that feels possible today?

You do not need the most impressive answer. You are looking for the one that feels manageable.

Practical Support: One Thing for Now

Try this when you feel frozen or overwhelmed:

  1. Pause. Let the whole problem wait for one moment.

  2. Name the pressure. Try: I am asking myself to solve everything at once.

  3. Ask one smaller question. What is one small thing I can do for myself right now?

  4. Choose only one action. Make a warm drink. Step outside for five minutes. Send one message. Put one needed document where you can find it.

  5. Let the action count. Do not dismiss it because it did not solve everything.

The aim is not to force momentum. It is to make room for one choice that belongs to you.

You do not need the whole plan to make one caring choice for yourself today.

Small Does Not Mean Insignificant

Small progress is easy to overlook because it rarely announces itself.

It may look like noticing your own preference before asking what everyone else wants. It may be resting before you are exhausted, saying no without a long explanation, or completing one task you have been avoiding.

Some days, your small step may simply be recognising that you need support.

These actions may not look dramatic from the outside. But each one can be evidence that your voice, your choices and your life are becoming your own again.

One Small Step Can Be Connection

You do not have to rebuild every part of your life alone.

If connecting with women who understand would feel supportive, you are warmly invited to the Inner Freedom Facebook Community.
