Healing From Fear After Abuse

The Mind That Kept You Safe Is the Same Mind That Kept You Small

Years after leaving, something small appears out of nowhere. An old photo. A message you weren't expecting. A name on a screen.

And before you have even had a chance to think, your body has already reacted. Heart racing. That freeze. That sick, familiar feeling in your chest.

You are safe. But your body doesn't know that yet.

Hello Beautiful Souls 💜

I remember it so clearly. Years had passed. My life had changed. I had worked hard to get to a different place, and on most days, I felt it.

And then something small would appear out of nowhere. A photo. An old message. Something I had not expected to see.

My whole body would freeze. My heart would skip. That old anxiety would rise up, sharp and sudden, as if no time had passed at all.

What made it confusing was that I knew, in my head, that I did not need to feel that way anymore. The danger was not there. But the feeling did not care what my head knew. It came anyway.

Why Healing From Fear After Abuse Takes Time: Your Brain Was Doing Its Job

Here's the thing nobody tells you about healing from fear after abuse. The fear you feel, years later, from something small and unexpected, is not a sign that you are broken. It's not a sign that you have not healed enough. It's not even irrational, not really.

It's your brain doing exactly what it was trained to do.

When you lived with danger, your brain learned to be on guard. It mapped the warning signs. It catalogued the smells, the sounds, the names, the silences, the feeling in the air before something happened. It did all of this to keep you alive.

And it was good at it.

The problem is that the brain doesn't automatically update its files when your circumstances change. Years later, it still has those old warning maps running in the background. When something triggers one of those maps, even something tiny and harmless, your body fires the old alarm. Not because it's lying to you. Because it hasn't yet learned that the threat is gone.

Your body's reaction is not evidence of weakness. It's evidence of everything you survived.

From Reaction to Awareness: Three Levels of Noticing

What helped me more than anything was learning to notice what was happening, without judging myself for it.

I have come to understand that there are three places we can be with these old fear-reactions.

The first is not knowing the loop is running at all. We just feel anxious, shut down, or on edge, and we think that's just who we are. We do not see the connection to what came before.

The second is seeing it, but still being caught in it. We know the anxiety is an old pattern. We can almost name it while it's happening. But knowing does not make it stop. And that can feel like we are going backwards.

The third is something different. We notice the reaction. We see it for what it is. And in that moment of noticing, a tiny gap opens up. A breath of space between the feeling and what we do next.

That gap is where the healing lives.

If you would like to read more about where that inner strength to keep noticing actually comes from, this might speak to you: It Was Never Out There: Finding Inner Strength After Abuse

I'm not going to tell you that reaching that third place is quick. For me, it took time, and patience, and a lot of compassion toward myself on the days it came back. But getting there starts with something very simple: just noticing that it's happening.

One Small Practice When the Fear Arrives

When you feel that old reaction rise, try this.

  1. Put your hand on your chest, right over your heart.

  2. Take one slow breath in, and let it out.

  3. Say, either out loud or quietly inside: "I see you. I know you were trying to help. I don't need this warning today."

That's it. You are not trying to make the feeling disappear. You are not telling yourself off for having it. You are simply acknowledging it, and letting your body know that you are here, that you are aware, and that it can begin to rest.

Some days this will help immediately. Some days it won't. Both are okay.

What matters is that you are learning to notice. And noticing is always the first step out.

You Are Doing More Than You Think

Healing from fear after abuse is not a straight line. Some days you feel like you are miles from where you were. Other days something small knocks you back to a place you thought you would have left behind.

Both belong to the same path.

What I want you to know is this: the fact that you are aware of what is happening inside you is not nothing. Awareness is not a small thing. It is, honestly, one of the biggest steps there is.

You are doing more than you think you are.

If you would like a clearer picture of where you are on your healing path right now, the quiz is a gentle place to start. It's free, it takes just a few minutes, and it meets you exactly where you are today.

With warmth and compassion,
